Castle Hill

May 13, 2017

This piece was written as part of the RNCM Rosamond Prize concert, a collaboration between RNCM composers and poets of MMu.  The poet Mary Matusz and I visited the Castle Hill monument outside of Huddersfield, built to commemorate the 60th reign of Queen Victoria, the year of Jubilee.  The hill has a history of legends and myths prior to the building of the monument.  This was my piece written for string quartet and soprano.  My ideas were centered around the voice coming in and out of a layer of light and wind, as we witnessed while visiting the hill.

Thanks to the Vine Quartet, and soprano Eleonore Cockerham.
